Occlusal Therapy

This branch studies problems related to temporomandibular dysfunctions. The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is a double condylar diarthrosis that connects the mandible to the bones of the skull. It is located under the ear and allows the opening, closing, and lateral movements of the mouth, which are also functional for chewing. TMJ pathologies can be of various natures; biomechanical issues (articular click, compression or articular blockage, incoordination of the condylar disc) can often be resolved or attenuated through the use of custom-made devices, such as Myorelaxant Splints (MRS).

At Vdent, we have a specialist, Dr. Gustavo Huertas, who performs gnathological therapy, which consists of restoring normal relationships between the mandibular condyle, the articular disc, and the glenoid fossa. This mainly involves the use of resin and metal products (bite splints) that reposition the mandible and, at the same time, produce muscle relaxation of the masticatory muscles and all other muscles involved. Once the contractures have been eliminated, therapy proceeds to stabilize the results, which may include occlusal correction by addition, subtraction, or modification using aids ranging from simple selective grinding to eliminating interferences (sometimes caused by poorly placed restorations), to restoring correct heights using resins, onlays, crowns, or prostheses; finally, dental positions can be modified through orthodontics.
